Request AppointmentWhy Are Regular Eye Exams Important?
Vision changes are a natural part of the aging process. However, many eye diseases can develop without noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Regular eye exams are crucial for preventing vision loss or irreversible damage through early detection and treatment.
These exams also allow Dr. Wilkens to monitor existing conditions, like glaucoma or macular degeneration, for timely treatment when needed.
What to Expect During Your Eye Exam
Our thorough eye exams differ from the quick vision checks you may have experienced elsewhere. We take the time to conduct a comprehensive evaluation that covers all aspects of your ocular health.
We’ll perform a complete eye health evaluation to examine the external and internal structures of your eyes. This may include the eyelids, corneas, lenses, retinas, and optic nerves. This evaluation can help detect early signs of eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
Depending on your needs, we may implement other tests and assessments.
Visual Acuity Testing
We will assess your ability to see at various distances, both near and far, using a standardized eye chart or phoropter. This helps determine your need for corrective lenses.
Binocular Vision Assessment
We will evaluate how well your eyes work together as a team. This is important for proper depth perception and focusing ability.
Eyelid & Tear Evaluation
This assessment helps identify conditions like dry eye or blepharitis, which can cause irritation, discomfort, and blurry vision.
Overall Health Assessment
Your eyes can sometimes be an indicator of overall health issues like diabetes or high blood pressure. Dr. Wilkens may consider these factors during your exam.
Tailored Exams for Your Needs
Dr. Wilkens believes in personalized care. Depending on your age, risk factors, and individual needs, your exam may include additional tests, such as:
- Digital Retinal Photography: This advanced imaging technology captures high-resolution images of the back of your eye, allowing for a more detailed examination of the retina and macula.
- Visual Field Testing: This painless test measures peripheral vision, which can help detect glaucoma or other conditions that affect side vision.
We will discuss the recommended frequency of your exams in person. For most adults, we recommend annual visits. In some cases, we may recommend checkups every 6 months.
